Orczy, Baroness (Emma Magdalena Rosalia Marie Josefa Barbara) Novelist, short-story writer and playwright. Born in Hungary, she was educated in Brussels and Paris and arrived in London with her parents at the age of 15. She studied art and married a fellow student, Montagu Barstow, in 1894. Her fame as a writer of historical romance was established with The Scarlet Pimpernel, which introduced her hero. Sir Percy Blakeney, and his exploits rescuing victims from the .guillotine during the French Revolution. Written in 1902, the novel was rejected by several publishers and Baroness Orczy had already dramatized it successfully in collaboration with her husband before its first publication in 1905.
