Hornung, Ernest William (1866-1921) Novelist and short-story writer. Born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, he attended Uppingham School and lived in Australia (1884-6) before returning to England and marrying the sister of Arthur Conan Doyle. He is remembered as the creator of A. J. Raffles, the gentleman-burglar whose exploits are related by his faithful friend Bunny in several collections of short stories, The Amateur Cracksman (1899), The Black Mask (1901), A Thief in the Night (1905), and a novel, Mr Justice Raffles (1909). Other books, notably Stingaree (1905), use an Australian background.
