Author: Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe
American short-story writer and poet.
Born in Boston, Poe was raised by the Richmond merchant, John Allan, after the early death of his parents. Later, by choice, he took Allan as his middle name.
The Allans moved to England, where Poe was educated at private school. He completed his schooling in the USA and entered the University of Virginia in 1826, but left soon after for not paying his gambling debts.
He then enlisted in the army under an assumed name and incorrect age. He was admitted to West Point in 1830, but in following year was dismissed for neglecting his duty.
In 1836 Poe married his 13-year-old cousin who died in 1847.
