(Richard Horatio) Edgar Wallace, (1875 -1932). Born and brought up in the slums of south-east London, he worked in a printing firm, shoe shop and rubber factory and as a merchant seaman, plasterer, milk delivery boy and solder before serving as correspondent for Reuters and The Daily Mail in the Boer War. For the rest of his life he combined newspaper work with a prodigious writing career.
