Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) is now remembered for his role in Judaism at the turn of the century. Zangwill, whose name means spice of ginger in Hebrew, was born in London of immigrant parents; his father came from Latvia, his mother from Poland. His father was a peddler. Zangwill was an active Zionist, the right-hand man of Herzl.
