He was adviser of Duke Xiao of Ch'in. The Duke died in 338 BC and was succeeded by the Crown Prince whom Shang had punished and mortally offended. Ch'in troops were sent after Shang and defeated Shang and his retainers in battle. Shang was killed and his body torn to pieces by chariots. His family was exterminated.
