Zamyatin was born in 1884 in the Central Russian provincial town of Lebedian. While studying at the St Petersburg Polytechnic, he become actively involved in the revolutionary movement and suffered both imprisonment and banishment........................ Zamiatin had worked and suffered so that the Socialist Revolution might take place. When it finally become a reality, he greeted it with enthusiasm............................ But he was quick to noticed the alarming tendencies that were developing in this new society from the very beginning. His books and plays began to reflect his dissolution. Soon publishers and theatres were intimidated into ignoring him; libraries were forbidden to circulate his works.................In June 1931 Stalin personally granted Zamyatin permission to leave Russia.
